CREATION OF RADA:
Law no.40/2006 of 30/9/2006 establishing and determining the organisation, responsibilities and functioning of Rwanda Agricultural Development Authority (RADA).
This law established and determined the orgarnisation, responsibilities and functioning of Rwanda Agricultural Development Authority abbreviated as “RADA”.
RADA has a legal personality and financial autonomy and it is governed accordance with laws governing organs of Public Service. RADA’s headquarters is in the city of Kigali, the capital of the Republic of Rwanda.
Rwanda Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) is a Government institution that was established May 26, 2004
Objectives.
To implement the National Agricultural Policy (NAP), Strategic Program for the Transformation of Agriculture (SPAT), and MTEF programs and sub programs.
To promote the production of high potential crops with high value on the international markets.
To promote the production of high potential strategic food crops to ensure household food security.
To promote value addition to agricultural products through improved processing and packaging.
To seek the effectiveness and the efficiency in implementing government policies, programs and sub-programs (synergies, economy of scale etc).
To execute the national agriculture policy,
To extend Science and Technology of farmers in order to increase their productivity,
To extend to farmers and Agricultural stakeholders science and technology in order to increase value to Agricultural products,
To initiate urgent mechanisms to extend affordable fertilizers and agricultural inputs to farmers and on time,
To control crop diseases and ravagers, To play a role in storage activities and market for agricultural products, To sensitise farmers on modern methods of farming like use of irrigation scheem terracing, use of manure and many other methods, in increasing agricultural production.
To coordinate the activities of professional farmers and agricultural stakeholders for joint performance.
To increase farmers capacity by enabling them to have a more participative role in their profession and national development.
To collect and publicise statistics and information relating to disease, fertilizers as well as national agricultural production.
To support the Government in execution of laws and regulations governing agriculture and its products.
To establish relations and collaborate with other regional and international agencies with the same attributions.
RADA provides various services.
It trains technicians and farmers in the use of organic manure. It facilitates the acquisition of credits and loans by farmers to purchase mineral fertilizers. In collaboration with RARDA, it helps farmers to acquire animals for the production of organic manure.
To facilitate the access of pesticides.
It also provides brochures on how every seed is planted technically. Through the post harvest unit, it makes a follow-up to farmers on how harvest is done.
Further, through the soil and water management unit does the drainages, irrigations and many others to protect soil.
Water harvesting is done to sustain water where there is little rain. Crop protection arranges trainings to farmers (strategic stock in case of an outbreak like seed diseases on how they should go about it. It informs the public to be aware on its current news like seeds, manures, trainings and many other.
